XP Off Twinks in XP On Battlegrounds. Does Blizz Need to Fix This?

For the last year, I keep seeing posts pop up in the WoW Battleground forums about “Super Twinks” in XP On brackets. They all seem to follow the same pattern where someone leveling through battlegrounds watched as a twink didn’t gain a level while they leveled from 10-14. Yes, in XP On battlegrounds, level 10s are staying at level 10 while their opponents are level from 10-14. There are several notable level 10s that they complain about most often.

This doesn’t really affect normal twinks willing to mix it up with other twinks, but it still needs to be addressed by Blizzard. This exploit has been out there for quite some time and Blizzard has done nothing about it. I’ve watched as one level 10 twink has racked up almost 200,000 HKs while staying level 10. With the rate at which 10-14 bracket XP OFF games pop, it would take years to reach this amount of kills. Like I said, this same level 10 is the subject of various QQ threads on the WoW Forums.

This morning, I decided to show how stupid it is for well geared twinks to join a XP ON WSG. I downloaded the addon that people are using to accomplish this, although a simple script makes it easy to accomplish too. This script worked 2 out of 3 times. In the game pictured above, I left after the 1st cap. I stuck around that long just to see if  the addon worked. It worked and if you check out the damage and kills, a well geared twink can destroy most of the other players. The hunter on the alliance side was sporting BoA gear and a couple scattered dungeon blues but didn’t appear to be a “Twink”. Imagine a perfectly geared 19 hunter in there. Pretty boring.

So here are my questions for y’all…

  1. Should I show the world how to do it in hopes that Blizzard addresses it quicker? I mean, Blizzard has to know it’s going on since it’s been happening for over a year now. I don’t think we’re going influence Blizzard now if they haven’t taken action before. It’s really simple to find out how to do if you search anyhow. My thinking is that if we get it out there and get more and more people in lower level brackets destroying those that are leveling though and get more people complaining, it gets fixed faster. Thoughts?
  2. What are your thoughts on people doing this in the 1st place?

Like I said, the way I play this game, it doesn’t affect me, but it’s cheating and still needs to be stopped. According to Cynwise, the main brackets where you’ll find people using this exploit are the 10-14 bracket and 70-74 bracket.

The 10-14 bracket is a delicate bracket for Blizzard in my opinion. This is most often the 1st bracket a new player encounters. Imagine getting  into an XP ON WSG as a level 10 with quest gear and no enchants and run into a twink hunter with BiS gear and enchants preying on 300 HP levelers.  That level 10 would be dead before the hunter got off a 2nd ability. What a way to bring a new player into World of Warcraft PVP right? Sure, it’s somewhat hypocritical since I was active in the 19 bracket back in the good old days when levelers 10-19 were mixed in with us. It’s sort of the same, but we didn’t have to exploit the queue system and XP Eliminator to do it. I am one of the few 19 twinks that embraced the idea of separating twinks and levelers.

One of the most common excuses that I hear from twinks in the 10-14 bracket is that they don’t get pops with XP Off. Well, you picked a bracket that’s not as popular. Deal with the issues 29, 39, and 49 twinks are dealing with. Create days where you queue with others in your boat. Another solution is play in a more popular bracket. We’ve all made sacrifices with the way Blizz has thrown twinks around, adapt like the rest unless of course you want to play this way because you want to blow people up while having very little resistance. I am sure that’s fun for certain types of players.

Is this a worthy cause to you? Should I try to get people behind us to get Blizz to shut this exploit down?

Oh and for the record, the games I played in the 15-19 XP On bracket were boring and I afk’d out of the game in the screenshot above right after taking it.

Why not show everyone it’s easy, all you need is a macro. I think it’s fine to do and also do it on occasion.

I had intentions of posting a video showing how and the carnage that ensued. I shot the footage, but I decided to back off on that because of the negative pub I got for showing everyone how to apply Wrath leg armors way back when.

The reason I showed it was because a group of twinks were using them and keeping the trick secret and I wanted to post it to get them nerfed quicker. Blizz was watching Twinkinfo close and I knew posting it would get someone’s attention, and it did.

Although I don’t really care (obviously) what people think of me, I don’t like that some people feel that I was a cheater for doing it. What they don’t know is that I did it for the post, used them for 1 bg, and deleted them. A couple weeks later I went afk from 19s for pretty much the entire time they were being used by everyone and their brother. People that didn’t understand why I did it hated me for sharing. Good, honest twinks hated me for letting everyone know. Cheating twinks hated me for sharing their secret. To this day, I think what I did by sharing with the world how to do it ultimately helped.

I don’t agree with this cheat either, but I don’t think, with MOP coming soon, that anyone at Blizzard will care. I also don’t think this site is on Blizz’s radar yet either.

      Anyhow… :)

Personally, I do not agree with it and think it should be fixed. How would showing more people how to do this accomplish anything positive? With that being said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and many may disagree with mine, which is fine. I just fail to see the logic in enabling more people to do this being a boon for the bracket and it’s reputation.

I don’t consider showing people how as positive for any bracket whatsoever. See reply to Eliot’s comment for more…

Normally I would say post the exploit. I hate the idea of publicizing it, but that’s normally what it takes to get things fixed, and players have already suggested some good solutions to the exploit, such as giving the XP on/off switch a cooldown. But I said “normally”, because this isn’t a normal situation. The exploit is a red herring for a larger issue Blizzard needs to address, and fixing the exploit will not help that. Sure, you’ll always have misanthropic players who simply want to beat up hapless newbies, but I don’t think that’s the driver for this issue. More on that as soon as I can get my next article finished.

To be the outspoken one here, there really isn’t a way to fix it. They’ve already gone so far as to make it so that anyone who levels or changes their XP gain settings are automatically removed from BG queues.

The way the game works, there’s always a millisecond of lag between the game client and the server, and the exploit takes advantage of that lag to do what it does.

Some players get unlucky and are removed from the queue without getting in.
Some players get unlucky and are put into a game without their XP being disabled.
Some players are lucky and they get the exploit to work some of the time.

Regardless, it costs 20g per game to do this. While that might not be a big deal at a glance, it does add up over time. 100 games x 20g per game is 2000 gold.

That is a good point. It’s got to cost a ton to continue to do this. While gold is easy now and definitely in MOP, it still can add up.

I think it should be Fixed, rolling on a new realm without BoAs then entering a BG is hurtful enough already. Having a 1k+ HP toons as the enemy is impossible to deal with.

There’s gotta be a way that Blizzard can fix this and I hope they do it sooner than later. In my opinion it’s probably a quicker fix if there’s an epidemic of people doing this…but on the other hand it gives twinks a worse reputation in the overall WoW community. I can see both sides of the coin in the name of trying to help the twink cause.

Any way that Blizzard would ‘fix it’ would hurt other players who aren’t exploiting. Besides, the reason why the exploit is still possible is because of lag, which is not something they can feasibly fix. How do you completely remove lag without hooking your computer directly up to the server?

Right now it’s just an inconvenience for players and it doesn’t work 100% of the time as it is. The truth of the matter is that this is something Blizzard did, so it’s up to them to address the issue in its entirety. There wouldn’t be people ‘exploiting’ if Blizzard hadn’t decided to create a system that segregates and discriminates twinks to begin with.

I’m sure I could throw in some MLK or Malcom X quote and really make a point, but I don’t think I need to.

I know several 19′s twinks that do this. I’m pretty sure opening a thread would do fuck all. I know because I’ve tried.

My brother was leveling a character on my realm to assit with twink potions and AGM assistance In a battleground, he showed me a 19 twink that was decked out. I was thinking he meant like full heirlooms, but I was wrong. This hunter was a actually 19 twink (not telling his name). I started talking to him and he was explaining that as he was Aussie like me, games don’t pop at night and this is the only way to play. He sent me a e-mail that shows people how to exploit.

At that point I only knew people that would /afk before a cap. I tried this out and it is so stupid. I got 111-0 and I was doing random shit, like using Raptor Strike for kbs. In the SS I’ll link below, we had a hunter w/ 39 kbs that left prior to first cap.

I showed a GM and I got told this response. “Blizzard is aware of such behavior. This issue has been raised numerous times on the forums. We are currently developing a way to resolve this problem.” We kept talking and the trust came out

“The fact is, this is an old topic. There are level 10′s created at the start of this year with the “of the alliance” title. I understand your frustration. This is the reason the separation off twinks from main-stream bg’s was introduced. The fact is I’m powerless in this situation. If you wish to go higher, you will get the same result.”

We later talked on the topic, buts that the main issue. It’s a joke and should be fixed, but it’s like GY farming. Even though people shouldn’t do it, a select few will always find a way around it.

      Trust = truth
**this is the reason for the separation of twinks***

Woow its been ages i played a bg on my 49 warrior.
I would love to join 45-49 again on bg’s like AV……
But not sure if its worth the risk of getting band for using that exploit?
But its so boring standing all day in SW having no XP off bg’s popping…
Why cant i just join without gaining xp.. oke i’m well geared, but i can still be blown up by 40 other horde… at least i wouldnt GY camp….
So tempting and yet so dangerous… i would die if my warrior would get banned… been gearing him up for ages (incl transmog)

I played level 10 in exp-on BG’s for a few weeks, nothing even happened. It’s the only way to get queues and it was fun to an extent. Odds of getting banned are quite slim.

Some people are making it seem difficult. After I learned to do it, it worked nearly every time.

Would you mind emailing me the method you’re using that works so well? I just want to compare what you’ve got and what I’ve got.

Well I managed to play 3 XP on BG’s as a non XP gaining toon.
We lost all 3 BG’s… so I can’t imaging at level 49, a twink vs heirloomed players will make a huge impact.

Its nice to do some PVP again but 20g a BG is expensive for me as i only have 1k gold and I dont have the patients to grind or AH farm…. XD

Unless you will GY camp the hell out of the other team I would consider playing like this starting from level 39.

I saw this warlock in a xp-on bg the other day while I was leveling a new toon, I checked this scoreboard for my name and it wasn’t listed assuming this was a different game I saw this warlock in. Saw the same warlock in two seperate games that day was like two days ago.

It was probably me testing the method of getting into these games. I couldn’t figure out how to determine if “MY” xp was on or off without waiting for a flag cap to confirm if I was getting XP. All in total, I was in 4 XP OFF Games.

Posted something on the official forum about this a while back after levelling through the 10-14 bracket and encountering this guy multiple times:
    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/medivh/Skope/simple
Levelled another alt through the same bracket a month or so later and guess what? Same guy was still level 10 standing above the GY one shotting people as they res. That was something like 50k honorable kills ago apparently as looks like he past the 200k HK mark recently.
The original thread was deleted which was a little sad, but there’s more going on over here:
    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/5835775388?page=2#31
The macro is posted there at the moment too although I haven’t tested it to see if it’s legit (not sure how long that thread will be up either).

Easiest fix would be to charge 100g instead of 10g to turn exp off. Extra benefit of keeping scrubs out of BGs
