MoP: A Revival or Blow to Twinking?

Back when Cataclysm was in Beta I wrote up an article explaining why I thought Cataclysm was going to be a revival of sorts for twinking.  Now that we’re on the cusp of a new expansion (Mists of Pandaria or MoP for short), it’s safe to say that Cataclysm was not the revival I was hoping for.  Sure, we got a few bones but overall twinking suffered quite a bit through Cataclysm.  With MoP being released in just under 2 months (September 25 to be exact), I’m weighing the options like a lot of you all.  We’re all dying to know whether MoP will be the revival we all hope for or will it be another blow to twinking.

I haven’t had any PTR time yet but after fooling around on the Beta and reading through things on MMO-Champion and Wowhead I’m hopeful that MoP might fix some of the issues that plagued low level PvP.  One of the biggest complaints of twinking these days is that it’s so bursty and that certain classes can take out their opponents with ease if the RNG gods give their blessing (*cough* hunter *cough*).  With MoP, however, we will all have a baseline 30% resilience.  While this doesn’t directly fix the burst in damage, it hopefully will slow down the amount of damage that we all are taking at the hands of OP classes (and in general).

There’s some buzz going around in the community, however, that healers will be ridiculously hard to take down with the changes that MoP is bringing.  With MoP still in the fine tuning stages it’ll be hard to tell whether those changes will go live (and will make healers the FotM classes).  Other than that we can all expect to see a dip in activity early on in MoP since everyone will be leveling their character(s) to 90, we’ll be shuffling gear as new BiS gear becomes available in MoP, we’ll get used to seeing a new class in BGs for the first time in WoW’s history (at low levels, that is) and we’ll see some new OP classes at low levels (though Hunters still look OP).  One more thing to keep an eye on is that there is currently plate gear from Scholo that has a level requirement below level 40.  Most are speculating that this will get changed before MoP is live but if the change makes the cut, it will drastically shake up plate wearing twinks in Mists of Pandaria.

I’ve yet to conclude on the matter of whether MoP will be a revival or a blow to twinking as I want to get in the PTRs before I make my decision.  For those of you with PTR experience under your belt, what do you think: revival or blow?  Please share your comments below.

Plate actually was dropping in SM with a level requirement of 30. There was quite a few drops as well which leads me to believe they will introduce it at 30

Some of the content in this article is a bit premature. Damage/healing numbers are usually adjusted as a last step to development, as they don’t want to spend a bunch of time tweaking numbers after every little change. I would wait until the Beta/PTR patches are slowing down before I would start questioning numbers, once you know that things are a bit closer to being finalized.

Between now and then, however, it is extremely important for you guys to provide as much feedback as possible (including data regarding damage/healing numbers) on the Beta/PTR forums. This will ensure that numbers passes are more likely to be stringent and catch everything.

I hope healing is nerfed, I don’t think some brackets will survive another bad expansion. If it is nerfed it will be an excellent expansion for twinks.

Base resilience has been upped to 50% on the ptr. While this is great to reduce burst we really need healing to be majorly nerfed as well. If healing remains as is most brackets will unplayable. Hopefully blizzard isn’t THAT stupid.

According to the planned changes, the baseline resil should only be 30%, so it’s safe to suspect the 50% is a bug. I don’t expect it to last.

lol, imaging my 49 tank now… 55% armor and 30% base pvp res… isnt that a bit insane?

I’m feeling really all-or-nothing about this expansion. If they get the numbers working right, I think the potential is really good for this expansion for XP-off brackets. When you add in something like 30% base resil, it really tightens up the tolerance of what Blizzard can do to keep things balanced, and if they get it wrong, I feel twinking could get into real trouble.

For 49s and especially 39s, once the MoP prepatch goes live, the Cloak of Coordination with the 70 spell penetration enchant may become clearly BiS when that converts to 56 PvP power. That’s 11.2% at 49, and even more at 39. Interesting times.

Speaking for 19s, warriors lose piercing howl, feral druids have no use any longer since their slow has been removed, rogues dont have shadow step, mages isnt really getting buffed/nerfed, healers are gonna be OP and hunters just seem to keep all their stuff. Warlocks looks very cool though. Destruction and demonology both seem interesting. Revival? I dont think so. Blow? Nah. Its gonna stay the same as it is now.

Is it even possible to get honor with your guild at level 39/49?

But is there a way to grind honor, because questing at my level is very low rep gain and at a certain point, all quests are done :p And i’m not even friendly yet lol :)

You need to be revered with guild to get the cloak ilevel 359!
At level 49 this is even wicked ! You need to gain 21000 rep in order to abtain it. (and also the required guild achievement)

Even if you send the account bound rep gaining tabard (100% rep gaining) to your twink it would take ages :p imaging you get 5 rep a boss and you kill 4 average… 20 rep a run , you need to run 1050 guilruns XD

Honored, not Revered. Still, yes, it’ll be quite a grind.

best thing to do is get a few other tinkers you know to join a level 25 guild and then just do 2s wargames and win trade until you have enough rep. Pretty sure wargames give rep.

alot is still not for sure yet, like: blizz keeps changing things like mangle and 2 other druid melee attacks have a slow, then it’s removed, last update mangle gets the slow again. and looking at MOP spells talents, it appears all specs get mangle and claw is gone. today hunters arcane shot got a 50% nerf. arc-mages arcane barrage got a 10% buff. the changes are still rolling

Am looking forward to the new twink pvp.. at low levels though.. with Rogues not getting shadowstep as an automatic with spec pick of sub… makes those hunters pretty tough.. or anything that can keep range ie cat form druids , casters.

based on how awfully unbalanced and bursty the bracket is, I think the improved resilience and nerfed hunters/rogues are looking very promising.

I’m interested that few sites discussing ‘Twinking’ in MOP have not raised the question of a new 85 twink bracket. Lvl85 Season 11 PVP gear and gems are now available for normal honor from vendors in Org and SW since patch 4.0.3. I have almost fully geared a toon in 2 weeks playing 1-2 hours a day meaning for pro’s and casuals alike this is a viable bracket with many players having a number of 85 toons to choose from to twink out. Pair this with MOP gems, enchants and profs, this bracket could show some serious potential!?

Agreed — especially if one doesn’t have any interest in purchasing MoP at all..I know I won’t be any time soon — There was a post on this site regarding the new bracket and its potential tho, so someone has shead light on this very dim topic..I just can’t remember who it was >.<
